Due to the fact that patients with a history of alcoholism or drug addiction were not allowed to participate in suvorexant clinical studies, it is unknown if this medication is safe for them. Suvorexant was determined to be a safe and effective short-term treatment for sleep problems in dementia patients in a Cochrane study. Suvorexant has not been investigated in this setting, thus it is uncertain if it is safe and effective for treating sleep issues in kids and teenagers.
The Japanese Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) and the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) as well as the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have all approved the use of suvorexant to treat insomnia at doses of 15 mg (in the elderly).
